Work
During the pre-civil war period, work differed for different classes of women. For the rich plantar class, women had the responsibility of helping their husband manage the plantations, and watching over the slaves. Wives of poor white men often had to find work outside of their home or work alongside with their husbands in order to survive. But both classes of women had a main responsibility, which was to raise and care for their children.
